So Organic

I know a few people (ok, a lot) who are not buying organic produce. That's OK! I prefer to buy organic, but I understand that it is an extra cost, and that it can be a new way of thinking about food. However, I'm here with some good news! Not all produce needs to be purchased organic, although there are a few that always should be.

Besides the fact that organic food tastes WAY better, our food supply in Canada and the States is grown differently than what it used to be. Rather than growing produce the way nature intended, our world faces different challenges, requiring the use of pesticides, herbicides, and genetic modification. Sound scary? It does to me. But organic produce reduces these things, and that is my main motivation for believing in and buying organic. Here's the list I use for knowing what to buy organic:

Peaches
Apples
Sweet bell peppers
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Cherries
Lettuce
Grapes (imported)
Pears
Spinach
Potatoes

Butter is also extremely important to buy organic, as is meat, but this is a post about produce, so there you go! Remember that local is best!

For more information on buying organic, this guy has been on Dr. Oz a few times, and I always appreciate his knowlege: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/08/16/12-foods-you-don-t-have-to-buy-organic.aspx
